چکیده

In this paper, we study the problem of collective decisionmaking over combinatorial domains, where the set of possible alternatives is a Cartesian product of (finite) domain values for each of a given set of variables, and these variables are not preferentially independent. Due to the large alternative space, most common rules for preference aggregation cannot be directly applied to compute a winner. In this paper, we focus on a particular social choice rule, namely Smith/Minimax. We introduce a distributed protocol for collective decisionmaking, which enjoys the following desirable properties: i) the final decision chosen is guaranteed to be a Smith member, and is sufficiently close to the Smith/Minimax candidate; ii) it enables distributed decision-making and works under incomplete information settings, i.e., the agents are not required to reveal their preferences explicitly; iii) it significantly reduces the amount of dominance testings (individual outcome comparisons) that each agent needs to conduct, as well as the number of pairwise comparisons; iv) it is sufficiently general and does not restrict the choice of preference representation languages.

Recent Developments in Collective Decision Making in Combinatorial Domains

Collective decision making is the process of mapping the individual views of several individual agents into a joint decision. The need for collective decision making mechanisms is abundant, not just in the realm of politics, but also for a wide range of scientific and technological applications. These include, for instance, logistics, grid computing, and recommender systems. The alternatives to...

Preference Handling in Combinatorial Domains: From AI to Social Choice

In both individual and collective decision making, the space of alternatives from which the agent (or the group of agents) has to choose often has a combinatorial (or multi-attribute) structure. We give an introduction to preference handling in combinatorial domains in the context of collective decision making, and show that the considerable body of work on preference representation and elicita...

Combinatorial Aggregation

Social Choice Theory (SCT), and the study of collective methods for decision making in general, have received a lot of attention in the AI community in recent years. The reasons for this focus are clear: SCT provides tools for the analysis of collective choices of groups of agents, and as such is of immediate relevance to the study of multiagent systems. At the same time, studies in AI have led...

Multiple attribute group decision making with linguistic variables and complete unknown weight information

Interval type-2 fuzzy sets, each of which is characterized by the footprint of uncertainty, are a very useful means to depict the linguistic information in the process of decision making. In this article, we investigate the group decision making problems in which all the linguistic information provided by the decision makers is expressed as interval type-2 fuzzy decision matrices where each of ...

An Auction-Theoretic Modeling of Production Scheduling to Achieve Distributed Decision Making Dissertation Proposal

Most existing methods for scheduling are based on centralized or hierarchical decision making using monolithic models. In this study, we investigate a new generation of scheduling methods based on a distributed and locally autonomous decision structure. Speciically, we propose a decision structure based on auction theory. The basic idea is to localize and distribute the functionality of schedul...
